Judit Falgueras transforms a warehouse into a family home

Architect Judit Falgueras revitalizes a disused warehouse from the 1960s in Sant Llorenç Savall, Spain, as a home for a family. The small industrial building originally served as a multifunctional space, mechanic’s workshop, and parking lot. The transformation involved the addition of a new metal structure to support the first-floor slab base and a comprehensive roof rehabilitation. The deteriorating existing truss was replaced with a Vierendel beam, creating a well-lit study on the second floor.

The project strategically retained the existing beams, sourced locally, repurposing them for the roof. The wood from the old truss found new life as furniture, serving as shelves, tables, and bathroom cabinets. The first-floor elevation features a timber-framed facade and a lightweight wood roof. Energy efficiency was prioritized through insulation of the backyard facade and party walls.

the renovation preserves the distinctive structural elements

The distribution on the ground floor encompasses the garage, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, and pantry. The living-dining-kitchen area, now open and unified, establishes a new connection with the outdoors through windows leading to a new terrace and patio. The first-floor layout aligns with the structural order, organizing spaces such as the distributor/study, three bedrooms, a gallery, and a bathroom.

The renovation and expansion project by Judit Falgueras maintained the integrity of the original space, converting the existing warehouse into a dwelling while preserving its distinctive elements and the essence of the original structure.
