‘sail’ poses a sustainable alternative to the traditional urn

Combining artistry with eco-consciousness, Sail is a funerary urn crafted by Furf Design Studio from a renewable mycelium-based biomaterial. Harnessing the material’s properties of structural integrity and low environmental impact, the studio poses a sustainable alternative to traditional urns with a product that can sturdily store ashes, yet dissolve in water or soil within a matter of days and transform into a natural fertilizer. As such, Sail encapsulates an environmentally respectful approach to a profound moment: the end of life — a concept the studio refers to as ‘smart dying’.

While solutions centered around the notion of smart living have gained considerable attention with their focus on enhancing intelligence and sustainability in our daily lives, Furf Design Studio acknowledges that sustainable solutions transcend this concept. With Sail, the design team offers a poignant and eco-conscious alternative for those seeking solace in a delicate moment. Inspired by the words of Fernando Pessoa, who wrote, ‘to sail is necessary’, the urn serves as a vessel to carry ashes on a final journey. Crafted from a renewable and biodegradable organic matter pioneered by startup Mush, Sail embraces sustainable practices to preserve the future.
