spanish design practice OiKo introduces ’27 sillas’, a chair collection that investigates the aesthetics of recycled plastic. exhibited at the il lacions gallery in barcelona, the series presents a new formal language with distinctive textures and colors, while establishing a new expression of circular design that connects the operator with the piece and makes him a participant in its final finish.

recycled plastic establishes new language and aesthetic

in ’27 sillas’ by OiKo,  recycled plastic is expressed as a new material with its own meaning and language that is now entering the domestic sphere and aesthetic code. ‘ for a year we have investigated the different expressive possibilities of post-consumer recycled plastics, the different origins and their mixtures and how they can reach an expressive level and an aesthetic that plays with the senses, confuses them, surprises them and tells about an anonymous mold of a chair.’ the design practice shares. 

upon completing their exploration of recycled plastic, the team at OiKo established a humanized industrial manufacturing procedure that brings the designer, machinery operator, and the piece closer together. the resulting pieces present a distinctive color palette, where one hue bleeds into the other, forming a marble-like appearance. according to the designers, the seats —which look more like sculptural works rather than furniture pieces— remind of william morris and his contribution to the arts and crafts movement.
