oma builds Metropolitan Village in taipei

The Taipei Xinyi-Wenchang Residence, or Metropolitan Village, is a pragmatic response to the changing dynamics of post-pandemic living and working. Designed by OMA, the 95-meter, 23-story tower in Taipei’s central business district incorporates distinct volumes clustered around a central services core. Each volume features aluminum panels and a curtain wall system, contributing to the creation of over 30 different living unit types. Designed to address the diverse urban conditions of the city, the tower offers a variety of post-pandemic lifestyles, from 68 sqm studios for individuals working remotely to 165 sqm apartments with spacious kitchens suitable for families. The majority of the units, sized at 120 sqm, are easily adaptable to accommodate different priorities such as daily living, working, or leisure.

a high-rise residential tower adapting to the post-pandemic era

OMA’s tower includes communal facilities dispersed throughout, addressing the need for shared spaces. The design team strategically placed a business center and meeting room on the ground floor to cater to remote workers, underscoring the tower’s practicality. Upper-floor amenities, including a library, bar, and restaurants, along with a gym and shared terraces on the rooftop, contribute to a balanced work-life environment. The Metropolitan Village serves as a connector, bridging the urban conditions of the Xinyi commercial area and the Wenchang district. Its volumes respond to the contrasting environments, with lower units strategically elevated to establish a new pathway linking the two districts while maintaining a human scale at the street level.

The façade of the tower, composed of a durable curtain wall system and aluminum panels, also acts as a canvas for the residents’ daily activities. Balustrades made of patterned glass, reminiscent of traditional Taiwanese apartment interiors, offer glimpses into spaces requiring minimal privacy. This interplay of transparency and privacy results in a dynamic architectural mosaic, animated by the residents’ movements as they navigate between living and working areas.
